A/Professor Dr. Yap Yee Guan graduated with BMedSci(Hons) and MBBS degrees from the University of Nottingham,
U.K. in 1992. Following his housemanship in University Hospital Nottingham and Southampton General Hospital,
UK, he underwent cardiology and general medical training as a Senior House Officer in the Cardiothoracic Centre,
Liverpool and St. George’s Hospital, London. He subsequently obtained the Membership of the Royal Colleges of
Physicians of United Kingdom before gaining entry into the U.K. Higher Medical Training in Cardiology and
General Medicine from 1997 to 2005. He received his postgraduate sub-speciality training in Cardiology and
Internal Medicine at a large busy tertiary cardiac centre in St. George’s Hospital, London, U.K. with a
sub-specialisation in interventional cardiology and complex pacemaker/ICD therapy. At the same time, he won
the prestigious British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship and obtained his postgraduate Doctorate of
Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of London for his research thesis in cardiology on risk
stratification for sudden cardiac death after myocardial infarction. Upon completion of his postgraduate
training in cardiology and internal medicine, he was awarded the United Kingdom Postgraduate Medical
Education & Training Board Certification in Cardiology and General (Internal) Medicine and the European
Board for the Specialty of Cardiology Diploma of European Cardiologist.
He is a fully trained, accredited and registered specialist in interventional & general cardiology and internal medicine at Consultant grade with the U.K. General Medical Council and a recognised European Cardiologist. He is on the National Specialist Register of Malaysia as a sub-specialist in cardiology and internal medicine. He returned to Malaysia in 2005 to head the Unit of Cardiology as an Associate Professor of Cardiology & Internal Medicine in University Putra Malaysia before being elevated to the position of Head of Department of Medicine in the same University a year later, a position that he still holds at present.
His main clinical expertise are interventional cardiology particularly coronary intervention, device therapies including single and dual chamber pacemaker, biventricular pacemaker and ICD as well as adult congenital heart disease. He also has a keen interest in transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiograms. His main research interest is on risk stratification of post-myocardial infarction patients who are at risk of sudden cardiac death for ICD implantation.
He won the Vale of Trent Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners Student Prize in University of Nottingham, U.K. in 1992. He was a recipient of the British Heart Foundation Research Fellowship in 1997 and obtained two other grants from the British Heart Foundation. He has published extensively in cardiology including 31 articles, 3 books, 11 book chapters and 90 abstracts in international medical journals. He gives lectures widely in national and international meetings and interventional cardiology conferences. He is a regular referee for international medical journals. He was conferred prestigious fellowships from the Academy of Medicine of Singapore, Royal Colleges of Physicians of Glasgow, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, European Society of Cardiology, Society for the Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, USA, the American Heart Association, USA and the American College of Cardiology, USA.
